After the completion of the major refurbishment of the church (1998 - 2005), supported
by the active participation of the Friends of St Nicholas, it was clear
that a revised role for the Friends was required to help support the church in
an ongoing manner and this was discussed and agreed by the PCC in 2005. The function
is encapsulated in the following statement: The role of the association of Friends is to enable people with an interest in St Nicholas Church to help sustain the life of the church; this includes financial and practical help as well as offering support for specific functions. The aspiration is to encompass those not merely from the parish and its environs, but from a wide geographical are. The Friends' support 2 or 3 major events each year to enable people to meet and enjoy the church and to partake in physical, as well as spiritual refreshment. Early notification of major functions are sent to each Friend and, in addition, they have the option of a copy of the AGM document to enable them to actively participate in the life of the church. To help defray costs and provide a modest income to the church, an annual membership fee of £12 is now requested from supporters of the Friends of St Nicholas. As the Friends' association is a sub-committee of the PCC, it is able to claim Gift Aid back on any donations it receives. |
